One of the gifts brought to the New World from Europe was the classic art of ballet. Ballet dancers trained in this beautiful dance possess an almost ethereal grace and poise, not to mention long, lean, and strong muscles. The reason ballet dancers develop these muscles is because of the techniques they learn for performance.
They work hard to maintain their bodies because their jobs depend on it, and they train rigorously.
In America, a well known center for ballet is the New York City Ballet. The center was one originally conceived by Lincoln Kirstein in the early nineties. Kirstein dreamed of having a place where European masters could teach dance to American dancers and audiences would receive access to the performances. He also wanted to create a new repertory of dance to improve on what the touring groups of European dancers could provide. In time, New York ballet became as formidable as its European counterparts, and the New York City Ballet an internationally recognized dance company.
The success of the New York City Ballet has led to a rise in interest in the classical dance form. As a result, the company's ballet dancers have created the New York City Ballet Camp, a dancer's boot camp that provides rigorous training for dancers who wish to become a part of the New York City Ballet troupe.. The New York City Ballet dancers also came out with the New York City Ballet workout, which is centered on the exercises and techniques dancers use to keep in shape.
The NYCB workout is a series of exercises designed to give both professional and unprofessional dancers maximum flexibility, strength, and muscle tone. The workout was created by Peter Frame and Melinda Roy, dance instructors of the New York City Ballet, and combines stretching, strengthening, and cardiovascular exercises. The aim of these exercise series is to give the wonderful abilities of the ballet dancers to anyone interested in learning. The series success as resulted in the program being adopted by gyms all across America. Outside of the gym, the DVD's can be found for approximately $20 online and in retail stores.
Classes offered in the New York City Ballet Camp are extremely rigorous, as well as highly competitive. They are primarily geared towards dancers interested in joining either the School of American Ballet or the New York City Ballet. In order to qualify for the classes a dancer needs to audition for a seat during the scheduled audition times for the school. Many qualified students, after successfully completing the Camp, can audition at any time for the New York Ballet performances, and have a good chance of being part of the cast.
When Kirstein and Balanchine first brought the New York City Ballet to America, they could not conceive of how it would become so popular in mainstream society. Before New York Ballet became a world-famous institution, ballet was considered something only the rich people could afford. Now with programs like the NYCB workout, the New York City Ballet can be found in the homes of everyday people all over the world.
