New York Theater Festivals

Many people imagine theater as an art performed only in intimate venues with 300 or fewer attendees. However, during New York City’s summer months, large numbers of people gather in both indoor and outdoor venues to watch emerging playwrights premiere their work.
The home of Broadway, off-Broadway and off-off Broadway is host to numerous theater festivals annually. New York theater festivals are wonderful grounds for up-and-coming talent to display their work and to congregate in one of the world's most culturally-thriving cities. Many of New York's theater festivals also give awards to the year’s best plays, performances and productions, which can draw attention to new rising stars. Perhaps for this reason as well as a growth in the quality of the shows themselves, New York theater festivals continue to grow throughout the years.
The single largest festival in New York is the New York Musical Theater Festival (NYMF), which has been held from the second week of September to the first week of October for the past three years. In 2006, the New York Musical Theater Festival set an attendance record at 36,400 people—a 65 percent increase over 2005. Awards for this year's festival were given in early November and went to actors, actresses, three musicals and select wild card winners.
Other high-quality theater festivals in New York include the Next Wave Festival, the Fresh Fruit Festival (featuring LGBT artists and giving awards for drag performance, among other categories), the New York International Theater Festival and the New York International Fringe Festival.
A wide variety of plays and musicals are annually performed at these festivals. For example, this year's Next Wave Festival repertoire ranges from classics like Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and Ibsen's Hedda Gabler to a dance production called underground, which re-enacts the 1960's social protest era. With the range of plays and other productions being performed, it is no wonder these festivals have become a staple of the New York Theater scene.
With the sheer variety of talent and entertainment available, these festivals develop a greater draw each year. Most have already begun planning their 2007 season, but several are still accepting submissions from new playwrights. Theater festivals may also be a prime opportunity for aspiring artists to switch roles. Seasoned actresses can try their hand at playwriting. Directors can switch over to an acting role.
With the interesting mix of shows available, any performer in the industry should take the opportunity to attend a New York theater festival in 2007!
