Rent the musical would at first glance seem to be about a group of young, starving artists just trying to get by. Rent on Broadway opened in 1996, and quickly became popular by critical acclaim and word-of-mouth. Four months after its first opening, the Rent Broadway version made its first impressions on pop culture.
Rent is commonly defined as payment for housing. The other definition, “to tear or split apart,” defines the musical Rent. Based on La Boheme, Rent on Broadway is focused on a group of young artists and musicians in New York, trying to make their way while battling drug addition, homelessness, and AIDS. Rent is an award winning, ground-breaking musical that portrays the lives of people trying to deal with these struggles.
The Rent Original Broadway cast is credited with bringing Broadway to a new generation. Rent Original Broadway cast members include Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp, Jesse Martin, and Taye Diggs Rent has since casted famous musicians and pop music artists including Nick Lachey, Joey Fatone, and Neil Patrick Harris, and a few American Idol contestants.
Scenarios not normally found in the traditional Broadway shows set the Rent Broadway turn apart from everything else. No musical before had featured characters of gay, lesbian or bisexual orientation and that focus brought Rent Broadway to the forefront of pop culture. Critical acclaim mixed with the untraditional subject matter formed a lasting impact for Rent Broadway audiences.
A lasting impact is exactly what Jonathan Larson wanted when he created the music and lyrics to Rent. He began writing the play in 1989, with the goal of creating a rock opera for the MTV generation. The The Rent Broadway cast album found success that hasn't been seen from a Broadway musical for 30 years. "Seasons of Love" is the most popular song on the Rent Broadway cast album. Other popular songs performed in Rent Broadway include “Will I,” :Light My Candle,” “La Vie Boheme,” and “Out Tonight.”
Tragically, Larson died hours after his first interview and never got to see the impact his work would have on the world. The Rent Broadway musical took its own generation to the edge by exhibiting the gritty sides of life. Since it's debut there have been over 4,000 rent Broadway musical productions. Rent is still being currently performed and is celebrating its 11th year on Broadway.
