Humorous Duet Acting Scripts

Published: February 14, 2007
Humorous duet acting comes in many different forms- from Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan in the “Rush Hour” movie series to Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in the “Lethal Weapon” movie series. However, the most popular form of humorous duet acting is found in the competitive sport of high school speech teams, also known as high school forensic leagues.
With the rise in necessity for something new and exciting for speech members to perform, humorous duet acting and an innovative humorous duet acting script have been growing in popularity for the past few years.
The National Forensic League season lasts from November to March and consists of 14-16 competitions. Each competition lasts between 10 and 12 hours. While most students are comfortable in single person categories, others find comfort in competing with another person. As a result, a duet acting scene, or duet acting skit, has become popular in forensic leagues.
Humorous duet acting is defined by the Wheaton North Speech Team as an 8 minute published humorous piece performed by two students who must utilize a table and two chairs in the performance. The humorous duet acting category is not sponsored by the National Forensic League (NFL) at national conferences. Nevertheless, most competitions include the humorous duet acting category along with the NFL sponsored one person humorous interpretation. Most high schools sponsor approximately 14 different speech categories. The most popular and diverse are:
• Dramatic Duet Acting- 8 minute performance where 2 students perform dramatic work.
• Dramatic Interpretation- 8 minute performance where 1 students performs a dramatic work involving 2 characters.
• Extemporaneous Speaking- a topic is given and 45 minutes to research. When the time is up the student gives a 6 minute long speech that has to use citations from their sources.
• Impromptu Speaking- a topic is given and students are allowed 6-8 minutes to prepare. The speech is usually 2-4 minutes in length.
• Original Comedy- students write and perform their own 8 minute long humorous script.
• Radio Speaking- students are given a packet of news information and must put together a 5-8 minute radio broadcast.
There are many more categories and they can be found online at wnspeech.com. After a category is chosen scripts need to be located. A duet acting script or a humorous duet acting script can usually be found online for free or can be collected from a speech teacher. Websites like Sceneby.com offer a free duet acting script after a free registration is completed. Actingscenes.com offers a humorous duet acting script and a range of drama scenes for free, and no registration is required.
Famous scenes from “Annie Hall,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “Gilmore Girls” are offered.
Local libraries will often have a book of duet acting scripts for browsing. As long as the humorous duet acting script is published it is fair game. Other popular resources for a smart, witty humorous duet acting script, or a duet acting scene can be found in favorite movies. Scenes from movies like “Tommy Boy,” “Billy Madison,” and “Forest Gump” have all been used for competition pieces.
A duet acting skit, or duet acting scene, can be very hard to synchronize, so the NFL recommends placing students together that seem to click when performing. This will produce the best results when competing and provide a better support system for the two students.
No matter what the category is, such as a humorous duet acting skit or a monologue research, preparation is key. No one can expect to go in unprepared and be great. Also, lots of practice in front of a crowd is necessary. After all, performing a humorous duet acting skit in front of a room of stuffed animals is much different from performing in front of a line of judges. Whether it's a humorous duet acting script or something else a little more subdued, get out there and get to performing!
